What is Wii Fit?
Wii fit is the new smash hit game developed by Nintendo for the Wii console. Specifically designed to get you into shape, Wii Fit features over 40 different activities for the whole family to enjoy. These activities will help to develop balance, burn fat, help tone your muscles and increase aerobic stamina.

How does it work?
Wii Fit uses a wireless balance board that detects weight and shifts in balance in any direction. You put the balance board in front of the TV, hop on to it and interact with the activities on screen.

What activities or exercises can I expect from Wii Fit?
The whole family can have fun with Wii Fit as their front room is turned into a fitness centre through Wii Fit's training programme and helpful tutorials. Wii Fit also allows up to eight players to monitor performance and progress statistics on a new channel on the Wii menu.

Two key measures can be evaluated via progress charts:

Body Mass Index (BMI): An evaluation of weight based on a ratio of weight to height.

Wii Fit Age: This is measured by calculating the player's BMI reading, testing the Wii Fit user's centre of gravity and conducting quick balance tests.

Over 40 types of activities - which fall into 4 categories:

Aerobic Exercise: Designed to get the heart pumping with Wii Fit's 10-minute workouts.

Muscle Conditioning: Controlled motions using arms, legs and other body parts.

Yoga Poses: Wii Fit focuses on balance and stretching with classic yoga poses.

Balance Games: Fun activities, such as ski jumping and heading soccer balls, that challenge the Wii Fit player's overall body balance.

Can Wii Fit help me lose weight?
Studies have shown that new style computer games can burn off a significant number of calories. A study at John Moores university in liverpool found that regular daily use could help shift 27lbs a year. Tests were carried out on girls and boys aged between 13-15 years of age which also showed that heart rate values went up to 130 beats a minute compared with 85 beats a minute with traditional consoles.
Dr Ian Campbell, medical director of the charity Weight Concern said "Children do play these computer games because they find them fascinating, and so it would be best if the games they play include an element of physical activity." Source: BBC News
