The Price – The price of the new 40GB PS3 is the first difference you’ll notice, selling for the introduced price of £299. This price is a reflection of cheaper production costs due to the following changes:

40GB Hard Drive – The 40GB PS3 hard drive has now been reduced by 20GB. This in our opinion is still a respectable amount of memory that will allow you to store plenty of games.

Loss of backwards compatibility – The 40GB playstation 3 will not be compatible with PS2 games but you will still be able to play the PS1 games on it. This according to Sony is a result of the fact that very few people use it.

2 USB Ports – The 40Gb console now has 2 USB ports instead of 4 as with the 60GB model

No multi-memory card port - The lack of this feature can be enhanced for those who wish, with multi portable devices which fit into a USB slot. This also applies to the USB slots themselves as they can be configured to whatever amount of USB slots are needed, although you will obviously have to purchase these separately.

Comparing the two versions:

40GB PS3 - £299
60GB PS3 - £349

For £50 pounds more you get:

Backwards compatibility
2 more USB ports
Memory slots
20GB more hard drive space

Sony Playstation 3 40GB to replace 60GB version

Sony announced two new PS3 packs which were launched on 10 Oct 2007. The current 60GB PS3 starter pack was replaced by the new Playstation 3 value pack at a new price of £349 and the 40GB playstation 3 currently £299.
It is now being reported that the new 40GB playstation 3 is to replace the existing 60GB model and that the 60GB version will only be available until stocks run out.

The introduction of the new PS3 Sony says has been as a result of user feedback.
In a statement from Sony regarding the new 40GB Playstation 3:

"The only functionality that is being removed is backwards compatibility, and this is because we believe this less important now than when we launched, as there will be 65 PS3 games available by Christmas. Furthermore we believe we should now be devoting our resources to the future of Playstation gaming and delivering next generation experiences".
